Repairing the World

We answer the call of Deuteronomy 16:20: Tzedek, tzedek tirdof (Justice, justice, shall you pursue).

Social Action Committee

The Social Action Committee’s guiding principle is the Jewish value of Tikkun Olam, or repairing the world.  We organize and run Tikkun Olam actions such as hosting holiday food drives on Rosh Hashanah and Purim, supporting a family homeless shelter with volunteers and funds, participating in the annual walk for the homeless, and initiating and advocating for greening projects both within TES and in the wider community. In addition to actions, our committee is also instrumental in bringing relevant educational programs to the TES community, and advocating for justice in public policy.

Greening Task Force

The Greening Task Force is a subcommittee of the Social Action Committee. Our goal is to draw on both environmental principles and Jewish tradition to inspire members of the TES community to adopt sustainable practices. Our focus on “Tikkun Olam” includes creating opportunities for the TES community to decrease the use of single use, disposable materials, addressing food waste, and encouraging lifestyle changes to minimize CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions. We also partner with faith based climate and environmental justice advocacy groups to enlist members of the TES community to join others in prayer, protest, and public policy advocacy.

Racial Justice Alliance

The TES RJA commits to providing all members of and visitors to our congregation with an equal sense of belonging by engaging in conversation and interactive programs to reduce implicit bias and resulting barriers that occur within our congregation. RJA also commits to educating congregants about rich histories associated with different identities. We commit to taking steps to reduce implicit bias and eliminate structural discrimination (a system of disadvantages and unearned advantages that give members of different groups unequal access to rights, privileges, resources and protections). We also commit to joining with organizations in the wider community to combat both implicit bias and structural discrimination.

Antisemitism Awareness Initiative

The TES (Temple Emanuel Sinai) Antisemitism Awareness Initiative works with our congregation to proactively address antisemitism by offering education, support, and training to our TES community. We strive to reach out to the wider central Massachusetts community to enhance awareness of antisemitism and to build partnerships with other local organizations.

In the Hour of Need Family Shelter (IHN)

In the Hour of Need Family Shelter (IHN) works in partnership with the faith community, groups, and area volunteers to provide shelter and assistance to families with children who are experiencing homelessness. The program’s primary goals are to assist families in increasing their income and to help them secure permanent housing, while providing the critical support services necessary for them to succeed.
